- Kylian Mbappe suffered an injury in the 1-1 draw against Real Betis.
- It’s currently unknown whether he’ll make the squad list or play against Espanyol on Sunday.
- Reports suggest the Frenchman is aiming to be fit for El Clasico against FC Barcelona on May 10.
One of the biggest unknowns of Real Madrid’s weekend is whether Kylian Mbappe will be part of the squad that faces Espanyol in the RCDE Stadium on Sunday.
Madrid are fighting not to finish a second consecutive season without major silverware. Holders FC Barcelona currently lead La Liga by 11 points, and can wrap up the title again if they win at Osasuna and the Pericos do them a favour by beating Los Blancos at home for the second time running.
Mbappe injured the semitendinosus muscle in his left leg towards the end of a 1-1 draw to Real Betis last Friday. There was uncertainty as to whether Mbappe asked to come off because Madrid were winning 1-0 at the time and he didn’t want to risk himself with the World Cup coming up.
In a disaster for all concerned, however, Hector Bellerin equalised for the Andalusians in stoppage time and Mbappe had a knock confirmed that could keep him out for Espanyol. According to MARCA, Mbappe is ruled out.
Is Mbappe planning his Real Madrid return for the Clasico?
MARCA says that Mbappe is continuing to work on the sidelines with the aim of reaching the Clasico on May 10.
When he returns could have a lot to do with how results pan out this weekend. If Real Madrid lose against Espanyol and the Blaugrana win, the title race is over.
Mbappe is doubtful for the latest edition of the world’s biggest derby too according to Le Parisien. Reaching the final of the last two editions with a 1-1 Les Bleus record, Mbappe doesn’t want to take risks of possibly missing the World Cup like teammates such as Eder Militao and Rodrygo.
It wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see Mbappe missing from the Espanyol squad list. But all eyes will be on his presence at the Clasico where injured Lamine Yamal will also be out for the home team at the Spotify Camp Nou.
