Javi Navarro Is Real Madrid’s Goalkeeping Plan, Not Trubin

Every August there is a goalkeeper Real Madrid are supposed to be signing. This month the name was Anatoliy Trubin, the Benfica keeper linked with the Bernabéu as a bet for the future between the posts. According to Bernabéu Digital, nobody at Valdebebas has any intention of making the call. The answer the club want is already inside the building, and his name is Javi Navarro — a keeper who will spend this season in the Real Madrid Castilla goal.

Bernabéu Digital report that Real Madrid do not plan any move for Trubin, because there is enormous confidence at Valdebebas in Javi Navarro — one of the academy’s most highly rated goalkeepers and, in the club’s planning, the man who steps up when the moment arrives. It is a small story with a large implication: Madrid have decided not to spend on the position, at a moment when the position is anything but settled.

The Javi Navarro plan: a season at Castilla, watched from upstairs

The outline is deliberately unglamorous. Javi Navarro is to be one of Castilla’s leaders this season, playing regularly and growing under the direct supervision of the first team. The club’s view, per the same report, is that he has the attributes to make the jump when the time is right — and that there is therefore no need to make a significant investment in another goalkeeper now.

That last clause is the whole story. Madrid are not saying Trubin is not good. They are saying they will not pay for a solution they believe they already own. Bernabéu Digital frame the coming campaign as decisive: the season in which the expectations placed on him are either confirmed or quietly revised. His progress, they add, will be followed especially closely.

Andriy Lunin is the variable

The plan has one moving part, and it is Lunin. Juventus remain interested in the Ukrainian, and we reported earlier this month that loan talks had opened while Real Madrid held firm. Bernabéu Digital say a Lunin exit this summer would force Madrid to reorganise their goalkeeping department — but they are equally clear that the Javi Navarro plan looks well beyond this window. If Lunin stays and moves on next year instead, the academy keeper is already earmarked as his replacement.

Behind both sits Thibaut Courtois, still the No.1 and still, as of our reporting on 14 August, inside a renewal that has stalled. A club with an unresolved contract at the top of the goalkeeping chart and a possible sale in the middle of it is not a club in a comfortable position. That is what makes backing a homegrown keeper a bolder call than it first looks.

A pattern, not an accident

None of this is out of character for the current Valdebebas. La Fábrica has had a strikingly productive summer — two more academy exits in mid-August capped a record run of trading — and the club have shown they will both sell youth talent for real money and promote it when they rate it. Backing Javi Navarro rather than buying a Trubin is the same policy read from the other side.

There is a practical point too. Real Madrid’s LaLiga list is full, their remaining business this month is about departures rather than arrivals, and José Mourinho’s outstanding request is reportedly a midfielder. A goalkeeper was never going to be squeezed in ahead of that — in a summer that has already seen Luis Llopis leave the club after two decades, the department has had enough change without a signing on top.

So the summer’s goalkeeper story ends without a signing, which is usually how these stories end. Trubin stays at Benfica, Lunin’s future stays open, and Javi Navarro gets the thing academy keepers rarely get — a full season of serious football at Castilla with the senior staff watching every week. If it works, Real Madrid have saved themselves a transfer fee. If it does not, the market will still be there next summer, and Madrid will have lost nothing but a year.
