The Courtois contract renewal has stalled at Real Madrid, a month after it emerged that the club had started work on it. Thibaut Courtois’ current deal runs to June 2027, and Bernabéu Digital report that the new agreement is paralysed for now — with January, when he could legally begin talking to other clubs, drawing closer.
Why the Courtois contract is on hold
José Félix Díaz of AS revealed in July that Madrid were working on an extension, keen to settle it early given how highly the Belgian is rated. Bernabéu Digital put the delay down to timing rather than doubt: a World Cup summer, Vinícius Júnior’s own renewal, six new arrivals and a stalled list of outgoings have all competed for attention since the club declared its summer business complete.
Courtois only rejoined training at Valdebebas a week or so ago, and has said publicly that the renewal will not be a problem. Los Blancos have had cleaner news in midfield, where Tchouaméni’s renewal was wrapped up earlier this month.
‘Happy to be under his guidance again’
The goalkeeper sounds anything but unsettled. Reunited with José Mourinho, under whom he won the Premier League at Chelsea, he was warm about the reunion speaking to Real Madrid TV this week.
“He is a great coach and, as a person, he is very approachable, says things as they are, and I like that. We were together at Chelsea, and we won the Premier League together. I have good memories of him, and I’m happy to be under his guidance again.”
Bernabéu Digital expect the extension to be made official in the opening months of the campaign. They add that Madrid have also begun to think about life after Courtois — not from any lack of faith, but because he is 34, and the Bernabéu has learned to plan early.
