Real Madrid have released a medical update regarding Kylian Mbappé on Monday afternoon in Spain.
“After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the semitendinosus muscle of his left leg,” a statement read, before ending with the message “pending evolution.”
Mbappe picked up his injury on Friday. He asked to be taken off towards the end of a 1-1 draw against Real Betis, when Los Blancos still led.
However a late equaliser from Hector Bellerin, coupled with FC Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Getafe, meant the Catalans finished Matchday 33 some 11 points ahead of Madrid.
The club first suspected Mbappe suffered from an overload in the part of his leg. Some 48 hours and change after, though, Madrid decided to carry out tests.
They’ve now learned of the exact extent of his discomfort, and he’s now in a race against time.
Will Mbappe play for Real Madrid in El Clasico?
It goes without saying that Mbappé will have to miss Sunday’s must-win away clash against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.
But he’s now on “tenterhooks” to make the Clasico against Barca on May 10th, while hoping to repeat his hat trick in the fixture last Spring, according to AS.
Outlets across Spain report a mix of Mbappe being at risk of missing, or not ruled out for, the latest installment of the world’s biggest derby. El Mundo’s Abraham Romero falls into the latter camp.
Minus Mbappe, Madrid need a win in Cornella on Espanyol’s turf to keep their La Liga dreams alive. In his absence, Gonza Garcia could step up as a lone striker.
Alternatively, though, Alvaro Arbeloa could go for a pair of wingers in a throw back to the 2023/2024 European and La Liga-winning days of Carlo Ancelotti. They’d probably be Vinicius Jr. and Brahim Diaz.
