Raúl Asencio was supposed to be days away from being an option again. Instead, the Asencio injury file has been reopened at Valdebebas, the treatment programme has gone back to square one, and the word nobody at Real Madrid wanted to hear this week is suddenly on the table: surgery.
According to Bernabéu Digital, citing MARCA, the shin problem the centre-back has been carrying since last season has flared up again just as he was reaching the end of his recovery. Madrid Universal, working from the same MARCA report, add the detail that matters most: if conservative treatment fails, an operation could rule him out for between six and eight weeks.
How The Asencio Injury Came Back
The timeline is cruel. Bernabéu Digital report that Asencio broke down on 30 July in a training session after feeling discomfort in the shin of his right leg, an absence that cost him the remainder of pre-season at exactly the moment he was determined to change José Mourinho’s impression of him. The projections had his return in its final stretch, and by all accounts it was going to plan.
Then, with the recovery process all but complete, the pain returned. He is now starting again from scratch with treatment at Valdebebas, aimed at reducing the tension around the affected area and allowing the injury to heal properly. Madrid Universal frame it as one last attempt to avoid the operating theatre, and describe the pre-season absence as a quadriceps problem he has since recovered from. Either way, the current issue is not a new one — it is the old shin complaint, returning.
The Problem He Refused To Stop For
The context here is a defender who played through it. MARCA’s reporting, as carried by both outlets, traces the shin trouble to the closing months of last season, when Real Madrid were desperately short of available centre-backs. Asencio could have stopped and dealt with it. He chose to keep going, because the squad needed bodies at the back and he had become a genuine option at a difficult time.
The compromise, per Madrid Universal, was a minimally invasive procedure on the affected part of the tibia, where scar tissue and a poorly healed callus had formed — the concern being that the area could weaken the bone and turn an existing fissure into something far more serious. That bought him time and got Los Blancos through the run-in. It did not fix the underlying problem, and the bill has now arrived.
What It Means For Mourinho’s Defence
In pure selection terms, Real Madrid can absorb this. Mourinho has Éder Militão, Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen and a new signing in Ibrahima Konaté, whose first competitive appearance in white was about as reassuring as debuts get. Nobody is redrawing the back four because of this.
For Asencio himself, though, the timing could hardly be worse. He goes into the closing week of the window unable to play, at a point when his own future has been the subject of persistent exit talk. An injured defender is a difficult defender to sell or to loan, and a summer that was supposed to be about winning a manager over has instead been spent almost entirely in the medical room.
Six To Eight Weeks, Or None At All
Everything now hinges on whether the conservative route works, and by both accounts there is very little margin for error left. If it does, he rejoins the group with the surgical option shelved. If it does not, he goes under the knife and loses the six to eight weeks Madrid Universal describe, in a season he has yet to feature in.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, do not get to wait for him. Real Sociedad visit the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday 26 August and Málaga follow on Saturday 30 August, with the squad back in training since Monday. The Asencio injury is a private battle running underneath a very public start to the campaign — and for a homegrown defender who played through pain when the club needed him, it is a rough way for the summer to end.
