Not Dribbled Past Once: Ibrahima Konaté’s Real Madrid Debut Was A Statement

Ibrahima Konaté was one of the last players to report for pre-season and managed a grand total of one friendly, against Schalke 04, before LaLiga started. Antonio Rüdiger, by contrast, had a full summer’s work behind him and the standing of a dressing-room heavyweight. José Mourinho picked Konaté anyway for Real Madrid’s opener at Espanyol — and by the end of the night the gamble did not look like a gamble at all.

The headline number from Saturday at Cornellà is the one that tells you least about statistics and most about a defender: Ibrahima Konaté was not dribbled past once. In a 1-2 win that Real Madrid needed until stoppage time to settle, the Frenchman produced the kind of unfussy, front-foot centre-back display Los Blancos have gone two seasons without being able to count on.

The numbers behind Ibrahima Konaté’s debut

Both the Spanish and English-language reads of the game land in the same place. Bernábeu Digital logged two tackles, an interception, five clearances, five recoveries and success in practically every duel he entered — four of five in the air and the same on the ground. Managing Madrid counted nine defensive contributions in total, eight duels won, and confirmed the detail that matters most: not dribbled past on a single occasion.

The ball-playing side held up too. Konaté completed 72 of his 74 passes for a 97 per cent success rate, a figure both outlets report. For a defender with one friendly in his legs, playing behind a midfield that spent large parts of the evening chasing the game’s rhythm, that is a striking level of composure. The No.16 shirt he was handed at his presentation earlier this month has been earned quickly.

Why Mourinho backed him over Rüdiger

The selection was the interesting part. Konaté arrived with markedly less match rhythm than Rüdiger and got the start regardless, and Bernábeu Digital’s framing is that the bet paid off completely. Mourinho has been unusually direct about wanting margins fixed rather than personnel changed, and centre-back has been the clearest margin of all.

Managing Madrid make the case plainly: Real Madrid have lacked consistency at centre-back for two seasons. Éder Militão’s injuries, Rüdiger’s fluctuating form, David Alaba’s final campaign before his release and Raúl Asencio’s inconsistency all stopped the club settling on a partnership, and Dean Huijsen struggled through the second half of last season. A leaner, fitter Konaté — on the evidence of Espanyol — addresses several of those problems at once, provided he stays healthy. That caveat has followed him throughout his career and it is the only serious question mark attached to this signing. We looked at how Huijsen and Konaté might pair up when the deal was completed.

One blemish, then the Bernabéu

It was not flawless, and pretending otherwise would be the kind of thing Madridistas rightly roll their eyes at. Real Madrid’s win included a customary lapse at the back, and Managing Madrid note that Konaté’s positioning in that moment could fairly be questioned. Espanyol’s goal was a reminder that this defence is still being assembled in real time, with adjustments obviously outstanding — which is exactly what you would expect from a back line that has had barely a fortnight together.

The next test is the one that decides how a signing is received. Konaté is expected to make his Bernabéu debut three days after the Espanyol game, when Real Madrid host Real Sociedad, per Managing Madrid. A home crowd that spent last season watching centre-backs get turned will have a fairly quick opinion on a defender who does not let it happen.

None of this makes one league game a season. But Real Madrid signed a Champions League-winning centre-back on a free transfer and watched him walk into the side on almost no preparation and dominate it. After the summer Los Blancos have had in the market — the misses as well as the arrivals — that is a straightforwardly good afternoon’s work.
