Arda Guler Real Madrid Problem: Three Starts, Zero Full 90s

The Arda Guler Real Madrid story of this young season is an odd one to tell. The Turk has fought his way into Jose Mourinho’s first eleven and become the player much of Los Blancos’ football orbits around — and he still has not been trusted to see out a single match. Four games, three of them as a starter, and not one completed 90 minutes.

The Arda Guler Real Madrid substitution pattern

Marca put it bluntly on Monday under the headline “Guler asks for a promotion”: he has earned the shirt on merit, but the one battle still beyond him is finishing games. Friday at La Cartuja was the latest exhibit. In a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis, Guler was among Madrid’s best players — he walked away with the man-of-the-match award, per Marca — and was substituted anyway.

Mourinho’s explanation was reasonable enough: the 21-year-old was carrying a yellow card in a bad-tempered match away from home, and a second would have cost Madrid a body they could not spare. Reasonable, but not the whole picture. It fits a pattern that predates this manager entirely.

The numbers are the argument. Espanyol, Real Sociedad, Malaga, Betis: four matches, three starts, no full 90s. He scored in the 4-0 win over Malaga and celebrated another against Real Sociedad. It has made no difference to the substitution board.

‘Always me, always me’

Marca traces the frustration back further, and the most eloquent moment came last season against Benfica. Guler was walking across to take a corner when he saw his own number go up on the fourth official’s board. He turned and left the pitch muttering, in resignation, “Always me, always me.”

It is a small scene that says a great deal about a footballer who knows he is decisive and is rarely granted the privilege of finishing his own work. Since his debut campaign in 2023/24 — a season in which, Marca notes, he did not feature in the Champions League run that ended in La Decimoquinta — being taken off early has been the constant of his Madrid career.

Why he became the easy change

The uncomfortable explanation is positional geography. Guler shares an attacking ecosystem with three players who are, in practice, untouchable: Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham. When a Madrid manager wants to shake the tree at 65 minutes, the tree he is allowed to shake is the one Guler is standing in.

That is the substance of what Marca calls his request for a promotion. Not more starts — he has those. What he wants is the status the other three already have: the assumption that he stays on unless something goes badly wrong. We looked at how Mourinho reshaped his role in midfield in our piece on Guler’s new job under Mourinho, and at the tug-of-war with Bellingham over the number 10 shirt’s territory.

A night off he did not choose

There is a bleak irony to the timing. On the evening this conversation reached the Spanish front pages, Guler cannot be substituted because he cannot play. He is suspended for Madrid’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu, alongside Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva — the three bookings we flagged in our look at Mourinho’s midfield suspensions for the Inter tie.

Per Madrid Universal, Mourinho does at least get Aurelien Tchouameni, Thiago Pitarch and Endrick back in the squad, with Raul Asencio, Eder Militao and Rodrygo still out injured and Ferland Mendy unregistered for the competition. Timings and TV details are in our Real Madrid vs Inter guide.

Guler will watch from the stand, then walk back into a starting eleven he has earned twice over. The question Mourinho has not yet answered is whether he will ever be allowed to leave the pitch at the same time as everybody else.
