The argument before the opener was whether Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler could share a pitch at all. Two players, one role, no obvious answer — and Mourinho gave the impression he agreed. Ninety minutes at Cornellà settled it, and not by leaving either of them out.
Real Madrid won 2-1 at Espanyol through Bellingham’s header and Carlos Espí’s late winner, but the performance that controlled the night came from the 15 shirt in a position he has never owned. Arda Güler played as a right-sided interior, and it may have solved more than one problem for José Mourinho. Our report on the LaLiga opener has the full match.
What Arda Güler actually did at Espanyol
The numbers are not subtle. Managing Madrid’s player ratings gave Güler a 9 — the highest mark on the pitch — for seven key passes and an assist, with his set-piece delivery producing Bellingham’s opener and very nearly a second header from the same source. They called it a masterclass and made him the standout player of the game.
The interesting part is where he did it from. Bernabéu Digital’s read of the game is that Güler operated as a right-sided interior in the mould of Luka Modrić — a role the Croatian owned before he left for AC Milan — controlling the game from inside rather than hugging the touchline. That freed Denzel Dumfries to attack the right flank as an auxiliary wing-back, which is why Madrid effectively played without a conventional right winger. Dumfries repaid it with a team-high four tackles and a 7.5.
How the shape works with Bellingham
Behind Güler, Fede Valverde and Bernardo Silva formed the double pivot, with Aurélien Tchouaméni the obvious rotation for the Uruguayan. Ahead of him, Bellingham took the pure attacking-midfield slot — because, as Mourinho put it, the Englishman “has a lot of goals in him”. That decision was already flagged when Mourinho spelled out Bellingham’s role, and Güler’s new job is what makes it affordable.
Mourinho has not closed the door on moving him deeper still. Asked about Güler in the pivot, he said — per Bernabéu Digital — “not today, but in the future he can play there”. Which reads less like a tactical experiment and more like a plan.
The caveats worth keeping
One game, and an awkward one. Espanyol ran themselves into the ground and Madrid needed a 90th-minute goal from a debutant to win it. Valverde lost track of Álex Calatrava for the equaliser, Bernardo Silva was marked down at 6.5 for being less noticeable than hoped, and Kylian Mbappé reached double figures for shots and 1.74 xG without scoring, per Managing Madrid’s numbers. Mourinho himself pointed at the fitness levels: “when it comes to pressing the way I like, we lack minutes and mileage,” he said after the game.
And the structural question is untouched. Madrid did not sign a holding midfielder this summer, so a double pivot of Valverde and Bernardo Silva is a solution assembled from what was already in the building rather than one the club went out and bought.
None of which changes the headline. Madrid went into the season with two number tens and no room for both, and came out of the first game with a shape that uses them together — one arriving in the box, the other conducting from the right. On the evidence of one night, dropping Arda Güler would now cost Mourinho more than picking him.
