Trent Alexander-Arnold has praised José Mourinho’s intensity and sky-high standards as Real Madrid’s preseason enters its fourth demanding day, revealing how the Portuguese manager has already made an impression on the squad during the early stages of his second spell.

Speaking to the club’s official channels after recent sessions at Ciudad Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold confirmed that expectations are elevated under Mourinho. “The principles and the level of expectation are very high,” the England defender said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how, the more we get to know each other, the more we learn and the more he can teach us.”

Intensity and Double Sessions

Real Madrid’s preseason training has featured gruelling double sessions in the Madrid summer heat, exactly what Alexander-Arnold anticipated upon returning to Valdebebas. “So far, so good. It’s hot and very intense. We’re in preseason, and that’s what we expected. There are a lot of tough sessions, a lot of double sessions, so it’s been intense so far,” he said.

The defender prepared meticulously over the summer, taking two weeks rest before shifting focus to running and rebuilding fitness levels to ensure he arrived in peak condition. “In the summer you have a couple of weeks off and then a couple of weeks getting back into running and regaining your fitness. Now, in preseason, you have to come back in shape. So I was ready and really looking forward to returning,” he explained.

Mourinho’s Immediate Impact

Alexander-Arnold expressed enthusiasm for his new manager, praising both the tactical approach and the manager’s reputation. “I’ve always admired the coach. I’ve played against him a couple of times and it’s a pleasure to work with him and his team. I’m sure he’ll teach us a lot and help us win trophies this year,” the right-back said, reflecting on his previous encounters with Mourinho as an opponent.

Clear Objectives Ahead

The squad’s immediate priorities remain simple and process-driven, according to Alexander-Arnold. Physical conditioning paired with absorption of Mourinho’s tactical principles must form the foundation before competitive fixtures begin. “It’s about getting in shape, understanding the principles and how the coach wants us to play. Understanding how we’re going to set up and present ourselves for this season. Simply, getting fit and back in action and regaining our rhythm,” he said.

The 24-year-old added: “I’ve been out of action for a long time, so it’s good to finally be back and lay a good foundation for a successful season.”

With Mourinho’s reputation for demanding total commitment from all squad members well-established from his prior success at the Bernabéu, Alexander-Arnold’s measured assessment suggests a squad already aligned with the elevated standards required as Real Madrid prepare to challenge on multiple fronts in 2026-27.
