Yan Diomande Presented As Real Madrid’s Record Signing

Yan Diomande was presented at Ciudad Real Madrid on Tuesday afternoon, posing alongside Florentino Pérez, alongside the club’s European Cups, and then in a white shirt with the number 25 on the back. It is the picture Madridistas have been waiting on since the summer’s biggest deal was signed off — and, as Bernabéu Digital report, the Ivorian arrives as the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history.

The Yan Diomande presentation was not the start of his Real Madrid career — that came in the final minutes at Cornellà on Saturday — but it was the moment the club framed what he is here to do. Bernabéu Digital’s account is unambiguous: both Pérez and José Mourinho wanted a star for the right wing, and the winger they took from RB Leipzig was the one they chose.

Why Mourinho Pushed For The Yan Diomande Signing

This was not a signing handed to the manager. Per Bernabéu Digital, Mourinho was central to the deal and approved it himself, because Diomande is precisely the profile he wanted in that position: a fast, direct attacker for a team built on transitions and on the counter-attack.

Anyone who watched the opening night at Espanyol will recognise the logic. Real Madrid won 1-2 through Carlos Espí’s late finish, but they spent long spells being asked to break down a low block with the ball rather than run at space without it. Mourinho’s Madrid is being designed to punish the moment possession turns over, and that requires wingers who can cover ground at speed. Diomande covers ground at speed.

The Attack He Walks Into

Bernabéu Digital describe the intended shape of it clearly enough: Diomande on one side, Vinícius Júnior on the other, Kylian Mbappé through the middle and Jude Bellingham as the number 10 behind them. Four attackers, two of them among the quickest in Europe, in a side whose manager has spent two months telling anyone who will listen that he wants explosiveness in wide areas.

The expectation attached to that front line is enormous, and it should be said plainly that it is expectation rather than achievement. Diomande has played a handful of competitive minutes for Real Madrid. The trident exists on paper and in a presentation photograph. It does not yet exist on a pitch.

The One Thing Still Missing

Bernabéu Digital have also been honest about what has not arrived yet. In a separate piece published overnight, the outlet argued that supporters have still to see the fearless one-versus-one dribbler who made his name in Germany — the daring, unbalancing version of Diomande who became one of the most coveted wingers on the market.

Their explanation is not alarming: his physical condition and an adaptation that is still in progress. Mourinho, they report, knows exactly what he has and is not concerned; what Diomande needs is minutes. He is in the squad for Wednesday, which gives him another set of them.

It is worth remembering how new all of this is to him. Real Madrid have handed the biggest fee in their history to a player who has been at the club a matter of weeks, and dropped him into a forward line that carries a Bernabéu’s worth of expectation. The club have at least been consistent about the staging: Marc Cucurella’s presentation a day earlier followed the same script of trophies, president and shirt.

Diomande, who has already named Cristiano Ronaldo as his idol, now has the number, the shirt and the photograph. What he does not have yet is a night at the Santiago Bernabéu. That starts when Real Sociedad visit on Wednesday.
