Rodrygo Real Madrid Return: A December Comeback Is Suddenly On The Table

For six months, nobody at Valdebebas has been willing to put a date on Rodrygo Goes. Now a date exists, and it is far earlier than anyone had dared expect: the Rodrygo Real Madrid return could come in December rather than in the new year.

That is the claim from Matteo Moretto, speaking on Radio MARCA and reported in English by Madrid Universal. Until this week the working assumption around the Brazilian was early 2027. Moretto moves the goalposts by a couple of months, in the direction every Madridista wanted.

What the Rodrygo Real Madrid return timeline now looks like

The injury itself was brutal. Rodrygo ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament on 2 March 2026, in a La Liga fixture at Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, and went under the knife eight days later in an operation carried out by Dr Manuel Leyes. The surgery was a success, but the damage was not confined to the ligament: there was meniscus involvement too, precisely the complication that turns a straightforward rehabilitation into an open-ended one.

The first genuinely encouraging milestone arrived at the start of this month, when the 25-year-old trained on the pitch for the first time in six months — the moment the work stops being about a knee and starts being about a footballer again.

A father’s view, and a reporter’s view

Rodrygo’s father, Eric Goes, offered his own assessment earlier this week. “Rodrygo will be back before February,” he said. “He will be back for the important part of the season and be important for the team, as always.”

Moretto’s report is more bullish still. December would mean Rodrygo is available before the calendar year is out, in time for the closing stretch of the Champions League league phase and the winter grind that so often shapes a title race. For a squad that has already spent this season absorbing absences, that would change everything.

The caveat stays firmly attached, though. This is a reported timeline from a journalist, not a medical bulletin from the club, and Real Madrid have confirmed nothing publicly about a date.

Why nobody is going to rush him

Whatever the reporting says, the decision belongs to the club — and this version of Real Madrid has shown very little appetite for gambling with fitness. José Mourinho has been conspicuously careful with minor problems since taking charge, holding back both Endrick and Aurélien Tchouaméni in recent weeks rather than pushing them through niggles.

That conservatism is not timidity. It is a direct response to two seasons in which Los Blancos have been picked apart by injuries — Ferland Mendy and Éder Militão are both still working their way back, and Raúl Asencio has only just been restored to Mourinho’s matchday squad for Saturday’s visit of Rayo Vallecano. A reconstructed cruciate with meniscus damage is the last injury on which to cut corners.

So December should be read as the earliest realistic window rather than a date Madrid have circled. If the knee responds well to contact work through October and November, the forward could be an option before the turn of the year. If it does not, February — his father’s marker — remains entirely plausible.

The player waiting on the other side

What Real Madrid get back is a separate question. The past two campaigns were difficult for Rodrygo even before the knee went: the form dipped, the role kept shifting, and the fluency that once made him the squad’s most reliable big-game forward came and went. A year on the sidelines does not solve any of that.

But he is 25, and he has never been a player who depended on raw acceleration alone. The timing, the finishing and the intelligence in the half-spaces should survive a rehabilitation intact. If the Rodrygo Real Madrid return really does land in December, Mourinho is effectively handed a new signing at the midway point of the season — one who already knows the building, the badge and the noise.

For now, the wait simply has a shorter horizon than it had a week ago. After six months of incremental progress reports, that counts as a very good day.
