Rodri to Barcelona: Real Madrid Left Reeling by Snub

The Rodri Barcelona move that looked unthinkable a week ago is suddenly close to reality — and Real Madrid have been left reeling. Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernández has agreed personal terms with Barcelona, now leading the race for the Spain captain, according to reports from Marca, Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic.

It is a stunning turn. For weeks Los Blancos had led the race for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, with reports that Rodri had even agreed personal terms with Real Madrid. But negotiations with Manchester City stalled over the fee — City wanted around €70m while the Merengues hoped to bring it closer to €50m — and Rodri grew tired of waiting. As the Guardian reported, City are now willing to let their man leave for about £60m, and Rodri spoke with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco on Wednesday about a return to Spain.

How the Rodri Barcelona hijack unfolded

According to Managing Madrid, Rodri’s preference is now Barcelona, drawn by the style of play and a dressing room stocked with eight of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad. Spanish outlet AS reports the midfielder informed Real Madrid directly that he had chosen the Blaugrana, even after receiving an attractive financial offer. Real remain technically in the race but would need a fresh push to change his mind.

The saga is a blow to José Mourinho, who wanted a controller to steady a midfield short on presence since Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić moved on; Sergi Valentin reports the manager is frustrated at how it was handled. Barcelona, also managing without the injured Frenkie de Jong, will now push to open formal talks with City — and Real Madrid must decide whether the marquee chase of their summer transfer business is over.
