Real Madrid Midfielder or Nothing: Zubimendi Leads the Chase

Real Madrid have spent most of August telling anyone who asked that their business was done. On Tuesday night, with less than a fortnight of the window left, the club’s own position was put more sharply than at any point this summer: if one more player walks through the door before 31 August, he will be a central midfielder, and if the right one cannot be found, nobody comes at all. The Real Madrid midfielder search is the only file still open at Valdebebas — and, according to the latest reports, Martín Zubimendi has moved to the front of it with José Mourinho’s blessing.

  • What Bernabéu Digital actually report about Madrid’s ‘midfielder or nothing’ stance
  • Why Zubimendi is back in the picture, and what Arsenal’s situation has to do with it
  • Why the Sergio Martínez deal is a completely separate file
  • The obstacle nobody at the club has removed: Florentino Pérez’s exit-first rule
  • What realistically happens between now and the 31 August deadline

Background: how the Real Madrid midfielder search got here

This is the third month of the same argument. Mourinho arrived in June and asked for two players — a holding midfielder and a centre-back. Neither has arrived. Two months on, the club have decided which of the two is worth a final push.

The obvious solution collapsed. Madrid’s pursuit of Rodri Hernández ran aground on a valuation the club would not meet, and the reasons that deal died at the Bernabéu were as much financial as footballing. On Tuesday evening the story reached its worst possible ending for Madridistas: Bernabéu Digital reported Barcelona’s official confirmation that Rodri is now their player.

Zubimendi has been circling the same vacancy ever since. He first surfaced at the start of the month, returned on 14 August when Chelsea joined the race, was flattened by a denial within hours, and came back again on Monday only to be denied again the same night. Anyone reading the beat is entitled to be sceptical. What is different on Tuesday is not the name. It is the club position sitting behind it.

Midfielder or nothing: the message out of Valdebebas

Bernabéu Digital report that Real Madrid have now defined their absolute priority for the closing stretch of the market. If a final reinforcement arrives for Mourinho’s squad, it will be a central midfielder. The view inside Valdebebas, they say, is unanimous: that is the one position still needing a signing of real weight, and every effort of the next two weeks will go into finding an opportunity there.

The wording of that report matters, because it draws a line under the rest of the market. This is not a club looking to round out a squad list. The same report is explicit that Madrid will not spend simply to fill a space: if they make one more major outlay this summer, it will be for a footballer capable of raising the level of the midfield immediately. Midfielder, or nothing.

Zubimendi has Mourinho’s green light

Bernabéu Digital, citing ElDesmarque’s relay of TEAMtalk, report that Madrid have reactivated the Zubimendi option and that Mourinho has already given his approval to the signing. The Spain international’s name, they say, has returned to the club’s orbit with real force in the last few hours — the direct consequence of the Rodri deal dying.

Two caveats belong here, and the source carries both. Nothing is agreed. And every previous version of this story has been shot down inside a day. Written properly, this is reported interest with managerial approval attached, not a transfer.

Why Arsenal might not fight it

The more interesting half of the report is the north London context. Arsenal, per the same piece, would consider Zubimendi’s departure manageable, having reinforced the department and with Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly available in the same area of the pitch. The detail that sharpens it: Zubimendi played only the final 25 minutes of the Community Shield, which has fed the doubts about how much of this season will be his under Mikel Arteta.

The player’s own will is said to point the same way. According to the report, Zubimendi’s camp have told Arsenal he would like to take the opportunity to wear white. That is a briefing, not a statement, and it should be read as one.

None of which makes it cheap. Arsenal paid around €65m for him barely a year ago and hold him under contract until 2030. A club that walked away from Rodri on price is now being linked with a midfielder who would almost certainly cost more than the fee Arsenal themselves paid. That tension is the story.

Sergio Martínez is a separate file entirely

One clarification, because the two deals have been blurred together all day. Bernabéu Digital report that Madrid are working on a ‘formula’ for Sergio Martínez, the 19-year-old Racing Santander midfielder whose release clause sits at around €3m — the clause we wrote about at dawn. Their understanding is that Madrid would sign him now and leave him at Racing on loan for one or even two seasons, the second year conditional on Racing staying up. Barcelona and Villarreal are tracking him too.

The club’s own line, in the same reporting, is that this is a move for the future and would neither cover the need Mourinho has identified nor prevent another signing. Madrid Universal, citing Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, add a wrinkle: Madrid are so far unwilling to pay even that €3m clause and are exploring other routes, with the plan being to place him in Castilla. The two reports differ on where he would play. They agree on the important part — he is not the answer to this season’s problem.

The obstacle: Florentino Pérez has not moved

Here is where the ambition meets the accounts. Bernabéu Digital reported earlier on Tuesday that Florentino Pérez has not shifted: there will be no signings unless somebody leaves first. The club would like to satisfy Mourinho’s requests — the same report confirms he asked for a midfielder and a centre-back — but as things stand it is not possible. We covered that freeze at teatime.

The problem is that the exits are not materialising. Bernabéu Digital’s running market log for the day framed it neatly: Mourinho keeps asking for signings, and nobody wants to leave the Bernabéu. Manchester United’s move for Eduardo Camavinga, reported late on Tuesday, is the one live proposal that would unlock the money — and it asks Madrid to sell a player Mourinho wants to keep.

So two reported positions co-exist and pull in opposite directions: a sporting department that has decided a midfielder is the only signing worth making, and a president who will not sanction one until the wage bill moves. Madrid Universal, also citing Cortegana, report the club are still monitoring two positions while Mourinho pushes for more. That is not a contradiction the newspapers invented. It is simply where the club is.

What happens between now and 31 August

Judged on the evidence rather than the noise, the likeliest outcome is still that nothing happens. Madrid have said no to a €3m clause. They said no to Rodri’s price. The idea that they will then spend north of €65m on Zubimendi in the last closing days of a window, without a sale, requires several things to break at once.

But three of them are genuinely in play. Arsenal are reported to be open. The player is said to want it. The manager has approved it. If a serious bid arrives for Camavinga — or for anyone else on the fringe — the money and the vacancy appear on the same afternoon, and this becomes a real deal very quickly. That is our read of the reporting, not a claim any of the sources have made.

Everything else is already settled for Saturday’s LaLiga opener at Espanyol. Fede Valverde has been given a fixed holding brief and is expected to line up alongside Bernardo Silva in the double pivot. A new arrival would not change that on day one. It would change what Mourinho can do in October.

The bottom line

Real Madrid’s summer has one unfinished sentence, and everyone at the club now agrees on what it says. Midfielder, or nothing. Zubimendi is the name attached to it tonight, with Mourinho’s approval reported and Arsenal reported to be listening — but the only vote that has not changed all summer belongs to the president, and it is still conditional on somebody leaving. Keep an eye on the exits, not the arrivals: they are the same story.
