Real Madrid Mark 79 Years Since Vidal And Pruden Sealed Ninth Spanish Cup

Real Madrid have marked the 79th anniversary of the club’s ninth Spanish Cup triumph, sealed against Espanyol at Riazor on June 22, 1947.

The club revisited the milestone on Monday, confirming that Madrid retained the trophy they had won the previous season by beating Espanyol 2-0 in a final decided deep into extra time.

According to Real Madrid’s official anniversary note, Vidal broke the deadlock in the 106th minute before Pruden made the result safe in the 119th minute.

Why the 1947 cup still matters at Real Madrid

The win was not just another line in Madrid’s honours list. It completed a successful cup defence under Baltasar Albéniz after two-legged victories over Ferrol, Betis, Castellón and Athletic Club on the route to the final.

The team sheet also underlines the scale of the club’s post-war era, with names such as Bañón, Pont, Corona, Clemente, Molowny, Ipiña, Vidal, Pruden and Barinaga all involved in the Riazor showpiece.

That detail gives the anniversary more weight for supporters: it was a final won by endurance, depth and late precision, rather than a routine Madrid procession.

For the modern Madrid led by Jose Mourinho, the anniversary is a reminder that the club’s cup identity was built long before the Champions League era became its global calling card.
