Team news: seven out for Mourinho
Mourinho named his travelling party on Thursday afternoon and the treatment room again did most of the selecting for him. Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo, Aurelien Tchouameni, Endrick, Raul Asencio and Thiago Pitarch all stay behind — seven senior absentees from a squad that was already being described as short.
Rodrygo and Mendy remain the long-term cases. Militao is working back from hamstring surgery, Asencio from a muscular problem, and Tchouameni has had his start to the season interrupted by groin discomfort. Thiago Pitarch’s knee injury has no fixed return date.
To fill the gaps, Mourinho has gone to the academy. Sergio Martinez, the 19-year-old signed from Racing Santander barely a week ago and earmarked for Castilla, has earned a first senior call-up, with Javi Navarro, Mario Rivas and Jorge Cestero also travelling. We covered the full list in our confirmed Real Madrid squad for Real Betis, and the fitness picture in more detail in our La Cartuja team news round-up.
Form guide
Real Madrid travel to Seville with a perfect record: three La Liga matches, three wins, the most recent a 4-0 dismantling of Malaga in which Jude Bellingham was the standout and Kylian Mbappe kept scoring. Federico Valverde, wearing the armband in his first season as club captain, has been one of the most consistent performers of the opening month.
Betis are in a rather different mood. Manuel Pellegrini’s side kept two clean sheets in their opening two fixtures before being taken apart 5-2 by Levante, and they come into this one needing a defensive reset in front of their own crowd. Pellegrini and Mourinho have history, and the Chilean has already had his say on his old rival — see our piece on the Mourinho-Pellegrini relationship.
What is at stake
A win keeps Madrid perfect heading into their Champions League opener, and it would be the sort of away result — hostile ground, thinned-out squad, Friday-night atmosphere — that tells you rather more about Mourinho’s rebuild than a 4-0 at the Bernabeu does. Betis away is one of the more demanding trips on the calendar even in a good week, and this has not been a good week for availability.
Kick-off is 21:00 CEST. Confirmed line-ups land roughly an hour before.
