The New Mourinho At Real Madrid: Real Or Strategy?

Something has changed about Jose Mourinho, and it is not the results.

Those look reassuringly familiar: two LaLiga games, two wins, Real Madrid top of the table. What has changed is the man in front of the microphone. The new Mourinho who has taken his seat in the Santiago Bernabeu press room this season is conciliatory, generous with credit and conspicuously uninterested in a fight — which has left the madridismo asking the question Mundo Deportivo posed on Saturday morning: is this real, or is it strategy?

What the new Mourinho has done differently

Four press conferences in, per Mundo Deportivo’s Pepe Gil-Vernet, and he has not stepped in a single puddle. The tone has been warm with the media, respectful towards referees and the game’s institutions, and protective of his own players. He hands the spotlight to the squad, keeps the conversation on the football and swerves anything that smells like a row — while still leaving the odd headline behind, because he is still Jose Mourinho.

The contrast with 2010 is close to total. That Mourinho arrived at Chamartin with a with-me-or-against-me framing that split the fanbase into two camps who barely spoke to one another. This one is preaching unity, and so far the public performance has matched the pitch.

Why the first spell ended when it did

It is worth remembering how much energy the last version burned. His three seasons at Real Madrid delivered a LaLiga title of real quality and a Copa del Rey, alongside a great deal of collateral damage: running feuds with journalists, with rival coaches including Pep Guardiola and the late Manolo Preciado, with match officials, and — most costly of all — with players inside his own dressing room. The standoff with Iker Casillas and the sidelining of Pedro Leon are the episodes that survived in the collective memory.

The wear and tear of all that brought his exit forward. Mourinho left in 2013 with time still on his contract, and the club argued about him for years afterwards. That is the cycle he has returned determined not to repeat.

Real change, or a communication strategy?

Mundo Deportivo frame it as an open question rather than a verdict, which is the honest position. Mourinho has always been an exceptional operator in front of a camera, and a conciliatory register is itself a communication choice — one he has reached for before when a squad needed protecting rather than provoking. Four press conferences is a sample size, not a personality test.

What can be said is that the early evidence points the same way away from the microphone. His public handling of Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe has been notably careful, and the dressing room has looked settled through the opening fortnight. Even Alvaro Arbeloa, the man he replaced, has been watching on fondly. “I’m a Madridista and I always will be. Even more so now that I also have a friend in the dugout managing the team,” the Fulham coach told DAZN this week, in quotes carried by Marca. Mourinho’s first spell did not tend to generate that kind of goodwill from the people he displaced.

The real test has not arrived yet

Here is the caveat that matters. Nobody is seriously asking whether Mourinho can be gracious while winning. Staying calm is straightforward when Kylian Mbappe is scoring hat-tricks and Los Blancos are romping to a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad.

The examination comes on the bad night: a hostile away trip, a refereeing call that goes against him, a European tie slipping away, a senior player briefing against the plan. That is the moment the 2010 model reached for the flamethrower. If the 2026 model reaches for a shrug instead, the change is real.

Until then, Real Madrid have a manager who has opened the season making friends rather than enemies, a captain in Federico Valverde anchoring a settled side, and top spot in LaLiga to show for it. Whether the calm is conviction or craft, the early returns are difficult to argue with — and after the noise of recent seasons, most Madridistas will happily take quiet.
