Mourinho Set A Trap To Find Real Madrid's Team-Sheet Leak

José Mourinho turned the oldest ritual in Spanish football — the hunt for the starting XI — into a test of his own dressing room before Real Madrid’s LaLiga opener at Espanyol. “My players know the XI; let’s see which journalist has the best connections,” the Real Madrid manager said at his pre-match press conference on the eve of the game at Cornellà-El Prat. According to Bernabéu Digital, relaying Marca, the line was not a throwaway provocation aimed at the press room. It was deliberate.

Why Mourinho set the trap

The Portuguese used the remark as a controlled experiment, the report says: tell the squad the team, then watch to see whether it reaches the newspapers and, if it does, work backwards. Mourinho is under no illusion that Real Madrid line-ups stay secret — at a club with this much coverage they almost never do — but he considers it worth knowing exactly where the information leaves the building.

It fits a manager who has spent his first weeks back rebuilding the internal discipline at Valdebebas. Mourinho has always placed enormous weight on trust between coach and players, and on the principle that what is said in the dressing room stays there. Finding out whether someone inside it is briefing outwards is, in that framework, a squad-management question rather than a media one.

He set the trap in the same press conference in which he defined a trophyless season as a failure, his first extended session with the general media since returning to the club.

For the record, the XI did become public: Bernabéu Digital published Mourinho’s team roughly an hour before kick-off, as their match-night live blog timestamps, and the desk carried the confirmed line-up shortly afterwards. Whether that tells the manager anything he did not already suspect is now his problem, and somebody else’s.
