Mourinho Presentation: ‘I’m One of You, I Always Have Been’

There was no scarf raised above his head, no packed Santiago Bernabéu, no wall of cameras. José Mourinho was formally presented as Real Madrid head coach on Tuesday in a boardroom at Ciudad Real Madrid, with Florentino Pérez for company and Real Madrid TV the only outlet in the room. Thirteen years after he walked away, the most theatrical manager in the club’s modern history was welcomed back almost in private.

Why it matters: the Mourinho presentation tells you exactly how this Real Madrid intends to carry itself. The Portuguese has already shaped a transfer window, run the double sessions that set the tone at Valdebebas and taken Los Blancos through a full pre-season. The club stripped the formalities back to a signature, a shirt and an embrace — and then let him talk.

Inside the Mourinho presentation: no audience, no cameras

The ceremony was held in the boardroom at Ciudad Real Madrid, where Bernabéu Digital report that Pérez welcomed Mourinho to the club for his second spell on the merengue bench. There was the formal signing of a three-year contract running to 2029, and a photograph taken alongside the club’s 15 European Cups.

According to Madrid Universal, the pair first watched a video mixing footage from Mourinho’s first spell with images from this pre-season, before the shirt photograph and the gifts from the president: a replica of the stadium, a watch, and a shirt with his own name on the back. Honorary president José Martínez Pirri attended. There were no family members and no press, and Real Madrid TV supplied the only images without broadcasting the event live.

None of which will surprise anyone who read the club’s decision to scrap the grand unveilings altogether. Mourinho was simply the first of the summer’s arrivals to go through the pared-back version, so the rest of Madrid’s new faces can expect the same rather than a Bernabéu stage.

‘I’m one of you’: what Mourinho actually said

Speaking to Real Madrid TV afterwards, Mourinho was warmer than the setting. “It’s like coming home. It’s even better than the first time I came,” he said. “That time it was the feeling of reaching the top as a coach. Now it’s more emotional.”

Then the line that will do the rounds: “I am one of you. Always have been, ever since I left.”

“Working for Real Madrid means a great deal to me,” he continued. “The responsibility of working for the club is paramount and something everyone at Valdebebas should feel.”

His version of the job description, as relayed by Managing Madrid, was notably unshowy. “Words aren’t enough… because it’s like a mission. It’s not about being worried about myself or whether I’m going to earn a lot or a little. I’m here to help everyone be better: players, staff… To create a culture of work, responsibility, ambition, and something I know well, which is the responsibility and honour of working for Real Madrid.”

No trophy promises, no shots fired. That is a long way from 2010, and a fair reflection of a manager who has been at work here since June rather than a new arrival with a microphone. Kylian Mbappé has already done the talking about titles on the squad’s behalf.

An interview tonight, then Espanyol on Saturday

Bernabéu Digital say Mourinho sits down with Josep Pedrerol for an interview on El Chiringuito, to be broadcast on Tuesday night — his first with the Spanish press since returning, and with an outlet he sparred with often enough first time around.

Then the football. Real Madrid open LaLiga away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday 22 August at 21:30 Spanish time, 20:30 in the UK, shown in Spain on Orange TV and DAZN, per Bernabéu Digital. Mourinho inherits a side that finished last season without a trophy for the first time since 2020-21, and a team sheet with real arguments still on it — not least the fight between Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham for the No.10 shirt.

A private handshake in a boardroom is a strange way to begin a second spell at Real Madrid. Saturday evening in Cornellà will feel a lot more like it.
