How Mbappé lost his place in El Clásico squad
Kylian Mbappé will not play El Clásico. Real Madrid confirmed on Sunday that the French forward had been left out of the travelling squad for the match against Barcelona – a game in which anything other than a Madrid victory will hand LaLiga to Hansi Flick’s side.
The circumstances made it all the more painful. According to MARCA, Mbappé had been training with the group in the days leading up to the fixture, and optimism around his availability had been growing steadily. Then, with around five minutes remaining in the final session at Valdebebas, he felt discomfort in his hamstring and stopped. The plan changed immediately.
Also, from a medical standpoint, Madrid had little room to gamble. A hamstring relapse in May – with the World Cup approaching and the title already almost gone – could have made a difficult situation considerably worse. The club chose caution, and Mbappé’s spot in the squad disappeared with it.
What Mbappé’s absence means for Real Madrid
This is not a routine miss. Mbappé is LaLiga’s leading scorer this season with 24 goals, and Madrid needed him precisely for a night like this: away at the Camp Nou, with the title on the line, against a Barcelona side sitting 11 points clear with four games remaining.
Without him, Madrid lose their most dangerous finisher, their primary threat on the counter, and the player signed to define exactly this kind of occasion. Vinicius Junior now carries the attack, supported by Gonzalo García, Brahim Díaz and Franco Mastantuono. In fact, Vinicius kept Madrid mathematically alive with a brace against Espanyol, and he will need to produce again.
A Clásico Madrid cannot afford to lose, despite a missing Mbappé
The timing arrives at the end of what has already been a bruising week for the club. The Valverde-Tchouaméni disciplinary incident, rumours around the dressing room, and persistent questions about the squad’s direction had already complicated the build-up. Mbappé’s absence sharpens all of it.
El Clásico was also supposed to offer him a personal answer. After criticism over his recovery process, a reported trip to Italy and doubts about his commitment, the Camp Nou would have been the clearest possible stage to silence the noise. That opportunity is gone. Injuries are injuries, but at Real Madrid, perception carries weight. And missing a title-deciding Clásico will only extend the debate around his second season at the club.
Madrid’s task remains stark. Win, or watch Barcelona become champions. They must now do it without Mbappé.
