Julian Alvarez: Real Madrid Stay Out of the Barcelona Fight

Two months ago Real Madrid put an offer on Atlético Madrid’s table for their centre-forward and were turned down. On Tuesday night, with Barcelona now circling the same player and the story dominating the Spanish market, Madrid’s answer was the shortest possible one: no thanks. The Julian Alvarez file, as far as the Bernabéu is concerned, is closed and will stay closed.

Bernabéu Digital report that Real Madrid have no intention of returning to the scene for the Argentine. Despite the latest information around his future and Barcelona’s interest, the club’s position is described as clear: Madrid made their move when they judged there was an opportunity, Atlético declined the terms, and the planning has moved on since. They will not enter a new auction, and they will not take part in the narrative building between Atlético and Barcelona.

Why the Julian Alvarez file stays shut

The reasoning reported is straightforward. Madrid believe the centre-forward position is already covered, and they see nothing to gain from a bidding war — especially one they think is wearing down two rivals. The same report is blunt about where the effort is going instead: Mourinho wants a central midfielder, and barring deals for the future that do not affect the first team immediately, everything is concentrated on that department.

The squad backs the logic up. Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior lead the line with Rodrygo, and this summer added Carlos Espí and Yan Diomandé to the forward group. Endrick, meanwhile, has stayed: Bernabéu Digital report that after weighing a loan he has opted to remain, with Mourinho having given him a prominent role through pre-season and explained where he fits, something we covered when Madrid turned down the Italian approaches. That is a lot of forwards for a club that is short of one midfielder.

The history that makes this awkward

None of this is a friendly parting. Madrid’s original approach in June, which pushed Álvarez towards asking Atlético for an exit, was rejected. When the bid resurfaced this month it left relations between Madrid and Barcelona described as completely broken. A striker of this profile moving anywhere in Spain would have been a story. One moving between the three clubs at the top of LaLiga in the final fortnight of a window is a small war — and Madrid have decided to sit it out.

There is a competitive read here as well as a financial one. If Álvarez ends up at Barcelona, Madrid will have watched two of the summer’s biggest names go to the champions in the space of a week, after the Rodri pursuit collapsed on price. A club that ends a window losing those two races is going to have to answer for it. The counter-argument from the Bernabéu is that both prices were set by other people’s desperation, and Madrid refused to pay them.

What it means for the last two weeks

Practically, it narrows everything. Madrid enter the closing stretch with one stated target profile and one stated condition: a midfielder, and only if somebody leaves first — the freeze we wrote about earlier on Tuesday. A forward, however good, does not meet either test.

For Madridistas the frustration is obvious: this is a squad that lost the league last season and has just watched a centre-forward of that calibre become somebody else’s problem to solve. The club’s answer is that the striker was never the problem it was made out to be. Saturday’s opener at Espanyol will start telling us whether they were right — and with Mbappé’s condition described as sensational going into it, Mourinho would argue the case is already being made.
