Of all the questions hanging over José Mourinho's first competitive team selection at Real Madrid, one mattered more than the rest: who plays behind Kylian Mbappé? On Friday night, with Los Blancos already in Barcelona for matchday one, the answer landed. Arda Güler has won the argument.
According to Diario AS, carried on Friday evening by Bernabéu Digital, the Turkey international will start Saturday's LaLiga opener away at Espanyol. It is a report rather than a team sheet — Mourinho will confirm nothing until an hour before kick-off — but it is the clearest signal yet of how the head coach intends to line up his side for the first competitive league match of his second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Why Mourinho has settled on Arda Güler
The reporting frames the decision as a reward rather than a gamble. Güler has been one of Madrid's standout performers across the last few weeks of pre-season, and the argument runs that he has convinced Mourinho he can carry a leading role from the very first weekend of the campaign rather than easing into one.
That matters because the competition was never soft. Mourinho spent a large chunk of the summer working through his options in the attacking-midfield position, with Jude Bellingham available for the same role — a selection question this site has been tracking since the middle of the month. On the evidence of the pre-season weeks, Güler edged it on performance.
It also fits a pattern. Mourinho has spent the summer handing minutes to whoever earned them, and Güler is not the only player to have climbed the pecking order that way. Bernardo Silva and Eduardo Camavinga have both had their roles rewritten during the same stretch, and the coach has spoken about the creative responsibility he wants Güler to take on.
The role: Güler in Mourinho's 4-2-3-1
Bernabéu Digital set out the tactical logic clearly enough. Güler's ability to find space between the lines, combine with the forwards and create danger around the box is the profile Mourinho wants from the number ten in his usual 4-2-3-1 — a shape that asks the attacking midfielder to receive in interior pockets and play forward quickly rather than sit as a decorative passer.
The company helps. With Mbappé running the channels ahead of him and Vinícius Júnior stretching the game from the left, Güler should get the ball in the areas where he does the most damage, and defenders in front of him will rarely be able to step out without leaving something else open. That is the theory. Espanyol away, on the opening night of a season, is a reasonable place to test it.
What we still do not know
Plenty, in truth. One reported starter is not an XI, and Mourinho has given nothing away publicly. What is confirmed is the shape of the travelling party: Bernabéu Digital reported that Aurélien Tchouaméni and Endrick both miss out on the squad, and Endrick's absence had been flagged earlier in the week.
Everything else lands at 21:30 Spanish time on Saturday, when Espanyol against Real Madrid gets the league campaign under way. If the reporting is right, the first name Madridistas will look for on the team sheet is the one they have spent all summer arguing about — and Arda Güler will have ninety minutes to make the argument redundant.
