Thibaut Courtois Agrees New Real Madrid Contract Until 2027

Real Madrid have agreed a new one-year contract extension with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, tying the Belgian to the club until the summer of 2027.

According to Marca, Courtois’ previous deal was due to run out in June 2026, and the two parties moved to finalise fresh terms as pre-season training got underway at Valdebebas this week. The Athletic reports the extension does not include appearance or performance clauses, with the 34-year-old remaining first-choice between the posts under Jose Mourinho.

Florentino Perez’s Board Break From Usual Over-30 Policy

The move is a notable departure from Real Madrid’s long-standing habit of tying players over 30 to short, year-to-year renewals, according to The Athletic, underlining how central Courtois remains to Florentino Perez’s plans between now and the next World Cup cycle. The update follows a scare earlier this week when Real Madrid moved quickly to rule out a serious injury to their goalkeeper during preseason medical checks.

Courtois has been Real Madrid’s undisputed No.1 since arriving from Chelsea in 2018, and the extension keeps Andriy Lunin, whose own deal runs to 2030, in a clearly defined backup role heading into Jose Mourinho’s first full pre-season in charge. With the Belgian now settled beyond next summer, Madrid’s goalkeeping plans look sorted for the immediate future, freeing Mourinho to focus his transfer business on the rest of the squad.
