Julian Alvarez has publicly said he wants to leave Atletico Madrid, sharpening one of Real Madrid’s biggest attacking transfer stories of the summer.
The Argentina forward made his position clear after Argentina’s World Cup Group J win over Austria on 22 June, with his club future now a live issue while he remains under contract at Atletico. Real Madrid have already been placed at the centre of the story after a reported EUR150m bid was rejected earlier this month.
Alvarez, 26, joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 and is now being linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. His message was framed around a desire to move rather than a named destination, but the timing gives Madrid supporters an obvious reason to watch Florentino Perez’s next move.
Real Madrid angle now becomes impossible to ignore
The key detail for Madrid is not just Alvarez’s willingness to leave. It is that the striker has gone public after Real Madrid’s reported bid was turned down, according to a fresh Reuters update carried by The Straits Times.
That does not mean a deal is close. Atletico still have strong contractual control and Alvarez said the timing of any resolution is unclear. But a player of his profile publicly pushing for a transfer changes the pressure around the situation, especially when Madrid have already tested Atletico’s stance.
For Real Madrid, this is now a waiting game with serious upside. Alvarez would bring elite pressing, Champions League pedigree and proven LaLiga production, but any renewed approach would still have to overcome Atletico’s resistance and the political weight of a cross-city transfer.
