The Yan Diomande Ballon d’Or nomination is the sort of line that stops a Madridista mid-scroll. France Football confirmed its 10-man shortlist for the 2026 Young Talent of the Year on Tuesday, and Real Madrid’s summer headline signing is on it — a teenager who has not yet started a single match for Los Blancos.
The Yan Diomande Ballon d’Or shortlist in full
Per Marca, the nominees for the Kopa Trophy — the award for the best player in the world under 21, handed out at the Ballon d’Or gala in London on 26 October — are Kerim Alajbegovic, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Pau Cubarsi, Yan Diomande, Lennart Karl, Eli Junior Kroupi, Johan Manzambi, Ibrahim Maza, Lamine Yamal and Warren Zaire-Emery.
Yamal has won the last two editions and is favoured alongside his Barcelona team-mate Cubarsi, so nobody at Valdebebas is booking flights to London. But the company is the point. Diomande is 19, he has been a Real Madrid player for a matter of weeks, and he is being weighed against the most coveted young footballers on the continent.
What the nomination is actually rewarding
Not his Madrid career, which has barely begun. The Kopa shortlist is built on the 2025/26 season and the 2026 World Cup, and on both counts Diomande made himself impossible to ignore.
At RB Leipzig he produced 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, 23 direct contributions from a winger still in his teens, before going to the World Cup with Cote d’Ivoire and turning a good season into a queue of suitors. That body of work is why Real Madrid moved. Reports at the time put the deal at around €125m, with add-ons capable of taking it towards €140m and making him the club’s most expensive signing — figures Madrid have never confirmed, and best treated as reported rather than official. We broke the numbers down in our look at what Diomande has really cost Real Madrid.
83 minutes, no starts — and a nomination anyway
The contrast is stark enough to be uncomfortable. Diomande has played 83 of a possible 360 league minutes this season and has not started once: 26 minutes against Espanyol after replacing Arda Guler, six against Real Sociedad, 25 against Malaga and 26 in Friday’s defeat at Real Betis. He has yet to reach the half-hour mark in a single appearance.
None of that is unusual for a 19-year-old adapting to a new league, a new language and a manager in Jose Mourinho who has rarely rushed young attackers into the deep end. It is, however, unusual for a player carrying that price tag, and we looked last month at how Diomande’s minutes are being managed in an attack that already contains Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.
Read the other way, the nomination is a useful corrective to the early impatience. Diomande was not signed on hype. He was signed on a season of numbers that a jury of international journalists has now ranked among the best produced by any young player in world football.
Courtois on the goalkeeper shortlist too
Diomande is not Madrid’s only nominee from Tuesday’s announcements. Thibaut Courtois has been shortlisted for the 2026 Goalkeeper of the Year, the Yachine Trophy, for the fourth time in his career, having won it in 2022. As Madrid Universal notes, the Belgian kept 17 clean sheets in 45 appearances last season behind a defence that was rarely settled, and he will compete with Joan Garcia, David Raya, Unai Simon, Emiliano Martinez, Gregor Kobel, Yassine Bounou, Edouard Mendy, Matvey Safonov and Vozinha.
Mbappe remains in the conversation for the main prize, as we set out in our piece on Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or candidacy.
For Diomande, the nearer-term question is simpler than any trophy in London. Madrid open their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night — details in our Real Madrid vs Inter kick-off time and TV guide — with Guler suspended and Mourinho short of options in the wide areas. A European debut would say rather more about his standing at this club than a shortlist assembled for what he did at another one.
