Thibaut Courtois Real Madrid Fitness Boost Before Atletico Derby

For a few uneasy seconds on Saturday night, the biggest story at the Santiago Bernabeu was not the second-half slide against Rayo Vallecano.

It was the sight of Thibaut Courtois rolling his shoulder and wincing.

This Thibaut Courtois Real Madrid scare has since been settled by the man himself, and the answer is exactly the one Jose Mourinho wanted with a trip to Elche and the Madrid derby both inside the next week.

The Thibaut Courtois Real Madrid scare against Rayo

The moment arrived late in the first half of a 4-1 win that flattered Los Blancos more than the performance deserved. Rayo midfielder Pedro Diaz struck a fierce effort towards goal and Courtois repelled it with the firm hands that have become his signature. The save, though, appeared to take something out of him: the Belgian immediately began mobilising the shoulder, and a stadium that had spent much of the evening grumbling suddenly went very quiet.

The timing was what worried people. Madrid’s goalkeeper had already produced several important interventions in the opening weeks of the season, and losing him now – with Atletico Madrid waiting at the Metropolitano – would have been a blow of a completely different order to a scrappy 45 minutes of football.

“I’m all right” – Courtois eases the fears

The reassurance came the following day, and in an unusual setting. Courtois was at the Madring circuit for the Formula 1 weekend, along with much of the squad, when he was asked about the shoulder. “I’m all right,” he said, as reported by Diario AS and relayed in English by Madrid Universal, adding that he is looking forward to the fixtures ahead, the derby very much included.

That is about as clear as a fitness update gets without a formal club statement. Barring a setback in training at Valdebebas, Courtois should start at the Martinez Valero on Tuesday and again against Diego Simeone’s side on 20 September.

Why Mourinho needed that answer

Madrid’s start to 2026/27 has produced plenty of goals and rather less control, and Courtois has quietly been one of the reasons the points tally still looks healthy. When the structure in front of him has broken down – and against Rayo it did, repeatedly, after the interval – he has been the one holding the line.

Andriy Lunin remains a capable deputy, but the Ukrainian has yet to feature this season, and asking him to make his first appearance of the campaign in a derby at the Metropolitano is not a scenario any coach wants. Mourinho already has enough to weigh up at the back, having reportedly settled on his preferred back four for that fixture.

The schedule offers no breathing room either. Madrid travel to Elche on Tuesday for a 21:30 CEST kick-off, then face Atletico away on Sunday 20 September at 16:15 CEST, before the international break. As Mundo Deportivo pointed out, there is a small mercy buried in that run: Madrid have been whistled in all four of their home matches so far and will not play at the Bernabeu again until Villarreal visit on 10 October.

Courtois’ future is being settled too

The fitness news lands while club and goalkeeper work on something more permanent. Courtois is in talks over a renewal that would take him to 2028, with Madrid keen to get it signed quickly. That has not stopped the succession planning in the background, with names such as Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel repeatedly linked as a longer-term answer.

Both conversations point the same way. Courtois is still the first name Mourinho writes down, and Saturday’s brief alarm was a reminder of how much of this Real Madrid side is built on the assumption that he will be standing behind it. For now, he will be.
