# Madrid Femenino Facing Nine Absences Ahead of Ajax Tie

Madrid Femenino could be without as many as nine players when the new season begins, according to Diario AS journalist Marta Griñán, whose report was [picked up by Bernabéu Digital](https://www.bernabeudigital.com/futbol-femenino/real-madrid-femenino-bajas-345546) on Thursday night.

## Madrid Femenino’s growing absentee list

Five players are currently in the treatment room: Janou Levels, Sara Holmgaard, Maelle Lakrar, Lineth Beerensteyn and Athenea del Castillo — the latter a particularly painful blow given her importance to the side. They are joined on the unavailable list by four youngsters away preparing for the U-20 World Cup: Laia López, Pau Comendador, Neo Bejarano and Silvia Cristóbal.

The timing is brutal. Pau Quesada’s side have put together a strong pre-season, with one friendly still to come against Deportivo Abanca, but the competitive calendar opens at full throttle: a two-legged qualifier against Ajax for a place in the Champions League proper — [the tie handed to Las Blancas in the qualifying draw](https://readrealmadrid.com/madrid-femenino-ajax-champions-league/) — followed immediately by a Liga F opener against city rivals Atlético Madrid.

## A race against the clock

As the AS report notes, time is now working against Quesada, who needs bodies back quickly if Madrid Femenino are to attack three high-stakes fixtures at anything close to full strength. No return dates have been reported for the injured five, so every recovery between now and the Ajax first leg counts — and few fitness bulletins at the club will be watched more closely over the next fortnight.
