Fede Valverde’s New Role: Mourinho Ends the Utility Man

For six seasons, the answer to almost any Real Madrid team-sheet problem was the same: put Fede Valverde there. Right-back in a crisis. Right wing when the wingers were injured. Box-to-box eight, false nine, even an emergency shift at centre-back. The Uruguayan never complained once. José Mourinho has now decided that era is over.

Why it matters: according to Bernabéu Digital, citing Mario Cortegana, Mourinho will use Fede Valverde in one position and one position only this season — as a holding midfielder in his double pivot. The versatility that made him indispensable is being deliberately switched off, four days before Los Blancos open LaLiga at Espanyol.

The new job description for Fede Valverde

The report is specific. Mourinho does not want Valverde used anywhere other than in the deeper midfield role, which means the only route into the starting XI now runs through that one slot. The stated aim is to lean into what the Uruguayan already does better than almost anyone: physical output, ball-winning and raw power over 90 minutes.

That does not mean he is being nailed to the halfway line. Bernabéu Digital say he will still have licence to push forward and arrive in the box at moments — which, given how many of his goals have come from exactly that run, is just as well. But the default setting is defensive, and it is a return to the position where his career began.

It also settles an argument that has followed him for years. Valverde has been quietly excellent in half a dozen roles and genuinely established in none of them. He told us as much himself when he spoke about Mourinho’s early impact and Bernardo Silva’s ‘magic’ this month. Specialisation is the reward for versatility, eventually.

Bernardo Silva, Tchouaméni and the squeeze in the pivot

Three players are competing for two shirts. Bernabéu Digital, relaying Marca, report that Bernardo Silva will form Mourinho’s first double pivot of the season alongside Valverde at the RCDE Stadium — the Portuguese having been an express request from his compatriot and, after the club’s decision not to sign Rodri, the man being groomed as the team’s main organiser.

Aurélien Tchouaméni is the one squeezed. Bernabéu Digital say, again citing Marca, that the Frenchman will be in the squad for Espanyol after recent physical discomfort, but he has not played a minute of pre-season. Having been the automatic choice in that role last season, he arrives at the opener short of rhythm and, on the outlet’s reading, facing rotation rather than certainty. We flagged the injury that cost him his pre-season earlier this month.

Bernabéu Digital’s own editorial went further, framing it as another contest between two players whose relationship has been tested before — a nod to last season’s dressing-room flashpoint. This time, mercifully, the fight is only for a shirt.

Why it could be the making of him

There is a version of this that reads as a demotion: the most adaptable footballer at the club being narrowed down to one job. There is a better version. Mourinho’s best sides have almost always been built on a midfielder who covers ground nobody else wants to cover, and Valverde has spent his whole career auditioning for that part without ever being handed it.

Given a fixed position, a settled partner and a manager who prizes exactly the qualities he has in abundance, the No.8 could have the most defined season of his Real Madrid career. We have already looked at how the pivot is shaping up, and it is the one part of this team that now looks genuinely decided.

The proof arrives on Saturday 22 August, when Real Madrid open LaLiga away to Espanyol at 21:30 Spanish time, 20:30 in the UK, shown in Spain on Orange TV and DAZN, per Bernabéu Digital. If the reports hold, Fede Valverde will start in front of the back four and stay there. After years of going wherever he was needed, he finally has somewhere of his own.
