Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid: Barrios Injury Hands Mourinho A Derby Boost

Real Madrid have been handed an unexpected piece of good news ahead of the Madrid derby. Atletico Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Pablo Barrios has picked up an injury, leaving one of Diego Simeone’s most important players in serious doubt for the Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid meeting at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on 20 September.

What Atletico have confirmed about Barrios

Barrios came through Atletico’s Champions League trip to Liverpool but finished the night at Anfield in discomfort. Tests carried out by the club’s medical staff since have confirmed a low-grade myofascial injury to his right leg, and Atletico announced that he will not travel to San Sebastian for Sunday’s La Liga game against Real Sociedad.

Crucially, the club have not attached a return date to the diagnosis. Their statement said only that his recovery would depend on how the injury develops — the kind of open-ended wording that rarely signals a quick turnaround. Beyond Real Sociedad, Barrios is also expected to miss the midweek fixture against Osasuna, which leaves the derby as the first realistic marker on his comeback and a genuine race against time.

As Madrid Universal report, relaying AS, the indications at present are not especially encouraging for the Rojiblancos.

Why it matters for the Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid derby

Losing Barrios would hurt Simeone more than most absences. The midfielder has grown from an academy graduate into one of the first names on the Atletico teamsheet, and he does the specific job that has caused Los Blancos so many problems in this fixture down the years: he covers ground relentlessly, breaks up play in the middle third, and gives Simeone the legs to press Madrid’s midfield rather than simply sit off it.

Take him out and Atletico lose a chunk of their engine at exactly the moment they need it. Derbies at the Metropolitano are almost always decided in central midfield, where Simeone’s sides look to make the game physical and deny Madrid the space to build cleanly. Whether Jose Mourinho’s side can exploit that gap is another question entirely — but it is a gap they would not have expected to find.

Madrid have their own midfield questions

The timing is useful, because the middle of the pitch is where Real Madrid’s own season has been most uneven. The Champions League win over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu was chaotic rather than controlled, and Mourinho has made no secret of his desire for a midfielder who can slow a game down and hold onto it.

Federico Valverde has carried an enormous load as captain in the opening weeks, with Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler and the still-settling Bernardo Silva competing around him. A derby against a Simeone team missing its most industrious midfielder is precisely the sort of afternoon on which that group could stake a claim. We looked at Mourinho’s search for midfield control earlier this week.

There is business to do first

None of which matters if Madrid slip up before they get there. Rayo Vallecano visit the Bernabeu on Saturday night with Mourinho’s side looking for a response after last weekend’s defeat at Real Betis, and Elche follow before the trip across the city. Our predicted line-up and team news for the Rayo game has the likely XI, while the full September fixture list and derby date is here.

Two league games stand between Real Madrid and the Metropolitano, and just over a week stands between now and kick-off. That is enough time for a low-grade muscle problem to clear, and Atletico will do everything they can to have Barrios available. But as things stand, Simeone is planning for a derby without one of his most important players, and that is a scenario Madrid will happily take.
